5 Letter Words Finder

You've got an R in second place, an E at the end and a row of gray letters you'd rather forget. A 5 letter words finder is a tool that filters every valid five-letter word by the letters you know, so the ones that fit rise straight to the top.

Below, you'll lock green letters in place, add yellow ones, rule out gray ones and see every Wordle word that's left. You'll also learn which letters are most common in each position, and when to switch to the full solver instead.

Which 5 letter words fit your letters?

Fill in only what you know, press Find words and the list appears below the form. Green letters go in their numbered boxes, yellow letters go in Contains, and gray letters go in Exclude, so every word shown fits all three.

How do you find 5 letter words with specific letters?

Combine the filters. Starts with and Ends with handle chunks like CR- or -IGHT, Contains handles letters you can't place yet, and Exclude rules out every gray letter, so the list of 5 letter words shrinks with each box you fill.

Here's what each box does:

  • Known letters: one letter per numbered box, for your greens.
  • Contains: your yellows, typed twice for a double letter.
  • Exclude: every gray letter from your guesses so far.
  • Starts with and Ends with: chunks of up to four letters.

Now that you know the boxes, here's the fastest way through them:

  1. Type each green letter into its numbered box.
  2. Add yellow letters to Contains and gray letters to Exclude.
  3. Use Starts with or Ends with for chunks like CR or -IGHT.
  4. Press Find words and scan the list for your next guess.

Which letters are most common in each position?

Each of the five slots has its own favorite letters. Based on 1,943 past answers, the table below shows the three most common letters in every position, which is handy when you're torn between two possible words.

PositionMost common2nd3rd
1st letter S (290)C (170)B (147)
2nd letter O (245)A (240)R (226)
3rd letter A (276)O (219)I (212)
4th letter E (256)N (152)I (145)
5th letter E (386)Y (274)T (215)

Pro Tip

Torn between two words? Pick the one whose letters sit in their most common positions. That word is more likely to be the answer, and even a miss tells you more about the letters around it.

5 letter word finder FAQs

How many 5 letter words does the finder search?

All 14,855 words that Wordle accepts as guesses, from the open-source Wordle word list. That includes everyday words and rare ones alike, so sort by most likely to see the common 5 letter words first.

How do I find words with a letter in a set position?

Type the letter into the matching box in the Known letters row. For example, put R in box 2 and E in box 5 to find every word shaped like _R__E, and leave the other boxes empty.

Can I search for words with double letters?

Yes. Type the letter twice in the Contains box, so EE finds 5 letter words with at least two Es, like GEESE or SHEEP. You can also lock both copies in place with the Known letters boxes.

What's the difference between the word finder and the solver?

The finder filters by simple letter rules you set yourself, while the solver reads your full Wordle guesses with their colors, applies the game's exact rules and suggests a next guess for you.

Why are certain words shown with a dashed border?

They've already been a Wordle answer. Old answers can come back, but it's rare, so they're a weaker bet for today's puzzle, and they stay in the list in case you need them.

Does the word finder work for other word games?

Yes, for any game that uses five-letter English words, such as crosswords or other daily word puzzles. Just keep in mind that the word list follows what Wordle accepts as a valid guess.
